Sadie - I was waiting for you to answer. I knew you would. That is very interesting. I would imagine that you at least understand some of most of those 11 languages. Maybe you are even fluent in several? OKOKOK...goodnight my friends.
By: SadieMy. on 14 Mar 10, 09:07:02
Well, I also gotta go. See you all later.

No, my family is English, but all white kids had to pas Afrikaans in Grade 12 when I was at school, during the apartheid days. Now, as far as I know, they have to take it as a subject to Grade nine, but it is not required for a pass. White kids can also take the black language spoken in their area. Black kids take English and their own language.

White South Africans are about 60 percent Afrikaans and 40 percent English (duh). Most mixed race people (coloured) are Afrikaans. Black people are about 50 percent Xhosa or Zulu (very similar languages) and the rest are Sotho, Venda, Seped is or Tswana. We have 11 official languages, including that spoken by the descendants of the San peoples, who were the original inhabitants of SA. They even have their own local radio station!

Sadie - you also speak it with your family? Or are you guys English speaking?
By: pearlbelch. on 14 Mar 10, 08:48:06
Did you guys take off? I guess I should go to bed. It's almost 1:00am. Carol - I never made it to see Avatar. I did fix my garlic beef stir-fry for dinner though. Sadie - take care of yourself while gardening. That or put on some extra protection. Have a fine fine morning girls.

It is Afrikaans, the commonly spoken language by many white and mixed race people here. It is derived from Dutch and German. Many settlers arrived here from Holland and Germany in the 17th and 18th centuries.

It is funny that he wears multi-button Henleys unbuttoned down to his belly button. He likes to show off his chest hair.
By: carolmac57. on 14 Mar 10, 08:22:57
LOL pearl. Great minds think alike. Word of the day shall be 'behoorlik'. Courtesy of Sadie.
By: SadieMy. on 14 Mar 10, 08:22:08
Hiya Pearly-girl. How that shoulder doing? At least the cooler weather is nice for gardening. Last week I got very bad sunburn in a strip across my lower back where my T shirt rode up while I was bending over. Peeling and itchy now. Silly me. Yesterday I was pruning some very springy branches and one whipped back and whacked me in a boob. Agonising. Note to self: Gardens are vicious.

Sadie Apart from housework, no work. Even house work is doubtful. We've not got much rain. Just slight showers. Been the coldest but driest winter I've known for a very long time. Probably rain all summer to make up for it.
By: pearlbelch. on 14 Mar 10, 08:11:15
Hiya girls. Still having trouble with YT?
By: SadieMy. on 14 Mar 10, 08:09:26
Hi Carol Ever so slightly soggy here. Wish it would rain "behoorlik" ie properly, for a week. Farmers are grazing cows on the road verges as the fields are so dry. Even reliable dams now drying up. Our complex has two excellent boreholes which is rare around here, so we can still water gardens twice a week. Hope you are not working today.
